About Surgical Physician Assistants

Physician assistants practice medicine under physician supervision and work in complement with the physician and his staff to provide medical care to a patient. Like physicians, PAs are trained in the medicine model in education programs that are located at medical schools, teaching hospitals, academic medical centers and in military medical centers. Prior to being admitted, most physician assistant programs require the applicant to have a college degree and previous healthcare experience.

PAs can provide assistance in surgery, complete patient histories and physical exams on consultations, order and interpret laboratory tests, diagnose and treat illness and write prescriptions as needed. Physician Assistants in South Carolina must be licensed and credentialed by the SC Board of Medical Examiners. A certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) must complete a national certifying examination and take a re-certification exam every 6 years.
